Speaking Unplugged Language in Year 2

Image
The number 9 required using left, right and backward commands. The students in Mrs Clamback's class learned to develop their computational thinking skills by writing instructions to help a robot learn to write numbers correctly. Once the class had reviewed the language that the robot speaks they then began to create instructions for it using command cards written in the robot's language. Students discovered that the start point was important for writing the instructions correctly and that the 'L' strategy was very helpful for writing correct instructions also. Next, the students will use the photos they took of their instructions to programme a real robot.

Researching and Designing Poor Conductors of Heat in Year 3

Image
Mould packs placed in different places growing steadily. Pic Collage poster of paper - a poor conductor of heat. Expanding key word brainstorm in Explain Everything journal. Whole class brainstorm focussing on environmentally friendly solutions and materials. Controlled variable - mould packs in the dark. Grouping all materials that are poor conductors of heat to a Pic Collage poster. The Year 3 students in Mrs Prosser's, Mrs Fullgrabes and Mrs Lindsay's class continued their investigation of the 'Cool Lunch' unit by researching and creating Pic Collage posters about materials that are poor conductors of heat. Initially the students had expanded their key word walls in their Explain Everything journals and even matched images to them. Then they were guided through a Google Advanced Search to find websites and images that they had the right to use and created posters using Pic Collage app on the iPad to demonstrate such materials. Finally, fo...

Exploring Landforms in Year 2

Image
Images researched with usage rights. Titles informed by colour wheel. Mrs Clamback's class learned to create posters about their prior knowledge of Landforms using the Pic Collage app . After using a colour wheel to design a colour scheme for their posters using 'opposites', the students learned to use online resources such as www.pixabay.com  and Google Advanced Search to find copyright free images to match their landforms. The students will now develop a poster about what they know about water bodies.

Unplugged Coding in Year 5

Image
The students in Mrs Sahai's class began their exploration of 'Robot Evacuation' by viewing a provocation Animoto video showcasing how robots are utilised to assist humans in various context, including right here in Perth. Also, the students learned to research their own examples using Google Advanced Search and identifying quality websites and files using site search (.org .gov) and file search (.pdf .png) filters. Further, the class learned how to be a robot and a robot programmer in an unplugged coding task where one partner wrote an algorithm using language specifically for the task of stacking cups for their partner 'the robot' to carry out. The students demonstrated a solid conceptualisation of computational thinking and will be well placed to commence coding in the 'Navigating Ideas' and 'Create Prototype' phase of the inquiry ( 'N' & 'C' of the LAUNCH cycle design thinking process).

Starting a 'Cool Lunch' Inquiry in Year 3

Image
Provoking thought through making and observing mould in various forms. Wonderings at the beginning of unit. The students in Mrs Prosser's, Mrs Fullgrabe's and Mrs Lindsays class learned to communicate in an online space and explain their understanding of food and mould as they delved right into their unit of study - Cool Lunch. After putting bread into bags and sharing their thoughts, predictions and wonderings about them the students learned to create a class TWLH chart on a padlet wall created for their class. The students learned to access the padlet with their iPads by scanning a QR code for it using the inbuilt QR code reader in Camera app. All students learned the protocols of communicating in an online environment such as identifying their posts with their first name, when to use formal and informal posts and keeping their posts about the topic of the padlet. Accessing the class padlet wall with Camera app. Communicating in the class online environmen...

A Window on Teaching and Learning with Educational Technology

This blog provides a window on the ongoing Professional Development programme with Winthrop Australia and Nedlands PS being conducted in 2019. The focus of this blog will be on products and processes developed that integrate Educational Technology in the context of the learning areas at Nedlands PS. Please feel free to use the blog to gain ideas or share any elements of your own journey with Ed. Tech.
