Designing, Testing and Analysing Cool Lunch Containers in Year 3

Testing and establishing consistent temperature data trials.

Testing materials to inform designs - 30 minute intervals, always in the sun, all containers sealed.
The Year 3's continued their inquiry into the 'Cool Lunch' unit by designing a container based on their advanced research, creating a code to make a digital thermometer with a Microbit and then establishing a trial of 6 different materials to gather data about the heat conductivity of different materials. All year 3 classes will now represent and analysed their data and use this to inform a redesign or revision of their prototyes of their 'Cool Lunch' containers they are making.

Provoking thought through making and observing mould in various forms. Wonderings at the beginning of unit. The students in Mrs Prosser's, Mrs Fullgrabe's and Mrs Lindsays class learned to communicate in an online space and explain their understanding of food and mould as they delved right into their unit of study - Cool Lunch. After putting bread into bags and sharing their thoughts, predictions and wonderings about them the students learned to create a class TWLH chart on a padlet wall created for their class. The students learned to access the padlet with their iPads by scanning a QR code for it using the inbuilt QR code reader in Camera app. All students learned the protocols of communicating in an online environment such as identifying their posts with their first name, when to use formal and informal posts and keeping their posts about the topic of the padlet. Speaking Unplugged Language in Year 2

The number 9 required using left, right and backward commands. The students in Mrs Clamback's class learned to develop their computational thinking skills by writing instructions to help a robot learn to write numbers correctly. Once the class had reviewed the language that the robot speaks they then began to create instructions for it using command cards written in the robot's language. Students discovered that the start point was important for writing the instructions correctly and that the 'L' strategy was very helpful for writing correct instructions also. Next, the students will use the photos they took of their instructions to programme a real robot.

Coding with BeeBots in Year 2

The students in Mrs Clamback's class continued their learning of coding and programming by developing short algorithms for BeeBots to trace and learn numbers the correct way. In pairs, the class used the commands (or language) they learned last session to build their algorithms for simple numbers first such as 1, 7 and 0. They then progressed to intermediate numbers incorporating longer algorithms such as 2, 5, 6. Most groups were successful with the more complicated numbers incorporating all commands such as 4, 8 3. All pairs filmed their successful codes for each number to develop an iMovie next Term as part of their broader inquiry of coding integrated with learning in HaSS and Language Arts.
